Life @ 35

I have been trying to get this blog post out for days but this flu/sinusitis/infection just wont leave me alone!!!

I celebrated my birthday a few days ago – well…”celebrated” is probably overzealous since I spent the day in bed cuddled up to a box of tissues, pills and orange juice, however, it was my birthday and I’m always grateful for another year of God’s grace!

I’m 35 – eeek!!!! Now, I don’t say that out of fear of aging – I actually love most things that come with aging (operative word being most).

Here’s a list of notable changes – some good, some not so!

  1. Rest is vital – in my 20’s I could survive and function on very little sleep, I healed from sickness or even major ops like my cesarean much quicker than in my 30’s. This past week I had no choice but to take 2-3days in bed just to get over this flu and I mean flat in bed, doing nothing – not even social media!

  2. Signs of aging – Fine lines and dry skin under my eyes have me googling eye creams – and they don’t come cheap y’all – I totally regret every time I rubbed my eyes, damaging that delicate under eye skin – I’m much gentler now (since seeing how expensive those creams are).

  3. Dry skin – I’ve always had oily skin and would skip heavy creams and lotions especially in the summer time but these days I find that half way through the day I’m looking like an ambassador for Lacoste – which also has me googling body butters – I’m such an adult (googling stuff!).

  4. Taste buds – This one is surprising – the older I get the more my palate changes – I now enjoy an array of veggies that I didn’t like in previous years.

  5. Counting pennies – I had a habit of mindlessly buying things for the sake of having new stuff or staying trendy but since trying to live more with less (that happens when you hit mid 30’s – you become all philosophical and stuff) I mostly buy quality, timeless and necessary items (also…I have 3 Kids and private schooling is expensive so I’ve become a cheapskate) – no shame in my game!

  6. Self awareness – I love how aware you become of yourself. Who you’re hanging around, what you’re listening to, what you’re reading, your thoughts, your words. It has brought a sense of peace to my life that I’m so grateful for. Yay for aging!!!

  7. No – It was never a word I could say (except to my kids). But I’m learning that it’s necessary for my sanity and emotional and mental health. It’s still hard though, but I’m getting better at it (except when it comes to chocolate- that’s still considerably hard).

  8. Do you – it’s easy to get sucked in by people’s lives on social media – for the longest time I’ve compared my blog or content to others and always felt like mine came up short, however, I’ve since learned that we’re all different, we all have different lives and we all have different stories to tell. I love inspiring people with my testimony – I believe that God saved my life for His glory and my testimony will always be a part of who I am.

Those are some things I wanted to share with you since hitting the mid-30 mark. I wanted to make it a list of 10 ( I mean who makes a list of 8 things) – (adulting is also making a lot of lists about stuff) but I’ve reached my philosophical quota for the day so that’ll have to do.

Sleeveless Coat

Hey Gorgeous Peeps!

Firstly, let me say that South-African weather is totally bipolar. Yesterday was extremely cold and wet and today, albeit a little windy, the sun’s shining and the weather’s fine – as if yesterday never happened at all!

I might have been more than a little excited when the weather turned cold and rainy yesterday, just so I could pull out this sleeveless Melton coat I purchased from Fablane Online – ha ha!

Thank you Michelle at Fablane Online – your service and the quality of your goods are superb – totally worth every cent!

Ladies, head on over to her Instagram profile here and check out all the trendy items she stocks!

1 Year Blogiversary!!!

Wow!!!! All About That Bass turns 1 – that’s right – 1 year ago I hit the publish button on my very 1st post. I had no idea what to expect as I set off on this blogging adventure, all I knew was that I had a deep desire to reach out to those who thought that you had to look a certain way to look or feel beautiful.

It wasn’t (and still isn’t) about the likes or comments or the number of followers – NO – it’s never about something as superficial as that – this blog was birthed from a desire to uplift and inspire women just like me – who often measure their worth by the number on the scale.

Looking back on the past year – I have to admit – this blog has forced me to grow in ways I never imagined. It has been such an amazing journey of learning, sharing, friendship and most of all gratitude!

Every e- mail subscriber, Facebook “like”, share and comment!

Everyone who follows me on Instagram and Pinterest!

All of the likes, pins and comments on the posts I’ve shared!

The sweet bloggers who include me in their blogroll!

A huge and heart-warming THANK YOU!

To celebrate, I will be giving away these 3 Revlon products to 1 lucky reader, all you have to do to enter is comment on this post and tell me what you love most about this blog!

Hello Lovely People!!!

Ok – wasn’t it just New Year’s a minute ago?!?

And now Easter is already upon us – whoa – the days seem to be flying past!

Today I’m channeling my inner College-Girl! I guess it’s the jacket and the twin buns – LOL!

I often keep my looks quite simple – I can be a plain-Jane like that – less is certainly more for me. That applies to make-up as well, most days I just throw on some mascara and lipgloss and I’m out the door!

I do admire ladies who go all out with hair and make-up though…I’m a bit of a tomboy – growing up with 5 older brothers and being the only girl – I guess it’s expected.

I totally love these cute, silver lace-ups I picked up from Mr P a while ago. I think they give this simple outfit that extra oomph!

Lacking Symmetry

Yes, I know I could’ve just said assymtrecial but I like the sound of lacking symmetry – ha ha!

I love this assymetrical top, comfy and light, and hides all my problem areas.

Paired here with my pleather leggings and some heels, and it’s perfect for a night out with the hubster!

Confidence

“Confidence isn’t walking into a room knowing they’ll like you – It’s – I’ll be ok if they don’t!”

And that is where I’m at at this point in my life.

Darn! It took me long enough – almost 30years!!!!

And although my circle has decreased in size it’s increased in value.

I know what I bring to any relationship/ friendship – be it friend, family, spouse. I no longer fret about who’s real and who’s not. And it’s made me a happier person.

Day to Night

How sick is this drawing of me?!?!? A very talented friend did this portrait for me and I’m so amazed at the detail. It’s pretty darn awesome!!!

Back to the post…

This past weekend I attended a friend’s birthday party. It was a very casual, Saturday night braai so I opted for comfy and casual in this jumpsuit paired with flats.

I was contemplating wearing this jumpsuit again (but decided against it) to a more formal party so I played around with it to take the outfit from a day to night look. Just swapped out the shoes and accessories and boom – ready for a night out!!!

Chaos and the Calm

I’ve had this song on repeat today. Maybe because that’s what I feel like sometimes.

You know when you’re on a path to recovery and you’ve actually been breaking ground and out of nowhere, someone or something comes along that threatens to shake everything?

Yeah! I’ve had to dig my heels in deep. I’m not going back there. Nope!!! Not ever!!! I might visit sometimes (LOL) but I ain’t staying!

I’m working on myself for myself because I don’t want to be that girl. That girl who looks for validation in others. That girl who wants to be accepted. That girl who spends her days trying to prove herself. I refuse to go back!!!

This might shake me, but I won’t let it break me!

My kinda LBD

These days I prefer loose, flowy dresses over anything even slightly clingy. I don’t go anywhere near my jeans or any kind of pants for that matter – it’s just too hot for that kinda commitment LOL!

And like I’ve mentioned in a previous post, you can never go wrong with a black dress.

I had this one custom made by the talented ladies at Fleur Fashion House – I also have the same dress in grey – you can have a look here.

Do you know what today is?

(Singing in my Tony Toni Tone voice) – It’s our anniversary!!!!

Yep! 9 years ago I said I do to my BEST friend and 9 years later, I still do!

My husband and I started dating 2 days after my 17th birthday (his 19th birthday).

I knew from the moment we first met that he was very different to other guys. Apart from his charming good looks, ( wink) he had this “thing”about him, still has today. It’s this, I-don’t-care-what-people-think-about-me attitude and honestly, it’s what attracted me to him.

At 17 (and many years later) I was the complete opposite of this (what I thought), rebellious 19yr old boy. He lived in the moment, did what made him happy and never apologized for it. It was intriguing to say the least.

Today, after almost 16yrs as an item and 9 yrs of marriage, we’ve both changed and grown in many ways but he still has that “thing” about him. Although, not in a selfish, single guy kind of way, no, he still lives in the moment, only now, he lives to make his family happy – and still doesn’t apologize for it!

I would like to honour you today Brandon (this post is for you babe), beside the obvious; our 3 beautiful kids, the provision, the protection, the affection that you often have to fight for (sorry), you have loved me literally from thick to thin and back to thick again. Your love was constant, undeterred by the number on the scale.

You took care of me when I was as good as dead and you were right there when depression reared its ugly head (rhyming skills ha ha).

You are never afraid to let me & the rest of the  world know how much I mean to you. You love our children (and tease the heck out of them) unconditionally. You’ve taught me how to make my voice heard and how to say no when I need to. But most of all, I want to thank you for the laughs. You really do make me LOL and that’s my favorite thing.

Here’s to 91 more anniversaries with you babe ❤️

I love you more and more everyday (except yesterday, yesterday you were really annoying LOL).

Is that a mush I see?
