This is my story…PT 1

I’ve been receiving a lot of questions regarding my “testimony” I mentioned in my previous blog post…so I thought I’d do a post around “My Story” to fill everyone in…it’s kinda long so I’ll do it in bits…

IMG_0983

A lil background…

Dad…img_8253

…committed suicide months before my birth…Mom raised myself and my 5 older brothers by herself (yes 5 older brothers) – twas a hard knock life for me LOL!

Early childhood was pretty normal and then at 8 I started gaining weight – it was only well into adulthood that I discovered the reason behind the weight gain… (#METOO).

Since then I gained weight at a steady pace and by high school I was hiding behind baggy tees and jeans ( it was easy to be a tomboy with 5 older brothers). Low self esteem, no confidence, insecure, constantly on diets – I despised the reflection in the mirror!  I started dating my now-husband when I was 17 which was another difficult thing to comprehend – I mean he’s a snack…what did he want with a fat girl like me?!?

Fast forward to 2005…

A year after giving birth to my daughter I’d heard about an affordable weight-loss operation being offered by a doctor in Pretoria – it sounded like a saving grace (and that’s probably what it was but in a totally different way).

I felt like it was my only way out! Being skinny or what was deemed an “acceptable” size was 1 of my dreams…right up there with all my other life goals – that probably sounds shallow to people who can’t relate but…DON’T JUDGE IF YOU’VE NEVER BEEN THERE! Society sucks!!!

I had the op…which worked like this…

A human intestine is roughly 7m long, so the average person would digest meals in 4hrs…mine was bypassed to a mere 30cm so food literally just ran straight through my system…LITERALLY!!!!

From the get-go I experienced various complications ie. Gallstones, acid reflux etc… but the doctor assured me that things would be ok…my weight-loss would eventually stabilize and then stop when I was at the ideal weight for my height.

Within 12 months I had lost an astounding 50kgs – MAMA I MADE IT!!!!! For the 1st time I felt “normal”, “accepted” and I was eager to start living (I was 23 at the time).

January 2007

3 months after our wedding…we were on holiday but something didn’t feel right…I was tired all the time and had muscle pain and then I woke up 1 morning paralyzed! I couldn’t get out of bed, I couldn’t lift my arms or move my legs…that was the scariest moment of my life…I broke down because my husband had to bath me, dress me and comb my hair (AND HIS PONYTAIL WAS THE WORST – MY GOODNESS).

025

I was taken straight to ICU with severely depleted EVERYTHING – electrolytes, vitamins, minerals (all stuff I didn’t even know we needed…but ok). Basically my organs were failing and I was dying…WHAAAAAAT – weren’t we on vacay like a minute ago?!?!?!

Lauren's iPhone 672

But yes…I was in ICU, my organs were failing, all my muscles were in spasms which caused them to contract so I was curled up like someone that had just had a stroke, I couldn’t speak because my tongue (being a muscle too) was twisted and the doctors advised my family to come and say their goodbyes. Doctors didn’t think they could save me!

To be continued…

PS Please excuse the quality of some of the pics…it’s the only ones I have…being so accustomed to hiding from cameras!

PSS Joy comes in the morning…

Thanks for allowing me to share Part 1 with you…I’ll post the next one in a few days!

Much Love xxx

1 Year Blogiversary!!!

image

Wow!!!! All About That Bass turns 1 – that’s right – 1 year ago I hit the publish button on my very 1st post. I had no idea what to expect as I set off on this blogging adventure, all I knew was that I had a deep desire to reach out to those who thought that you had to look a certain way to look or feel beautiful.

It wasn’t (and still isn’t) about the likes or comments or the number of followers – NO – it’s never about something as superficial as that – this blog was birthed from a desire to uplift and inspire women just like me – who often measure their worth by the number on the scale.

Looking back on the past year – I have to admit – this blog has forced me to grow in ways I never imagined. It has been such an amazing journey of learning, sharing, friendship and most of all gratitude!

Every e- mail subscriber, Facebook “like”, share and comment!

Everyone who follows me on Instagram and Pinterest!

All of the likes, pins and comments on the posts I’ve shared!

The sweet bloggers who include me in their blogroll!

A huge and heart-warming THANK YOU!

To celebrate, I will be giving away these 3 Revlon products to 1 lucky reader, all you have to do to enter is comment on this post and tell me what you love most about this blog!

(Please note – only people in S.A)

Thank you for reading & remember to stay sassy

Jumpsuit

Well, Hello!

I haven’t done a blog post in a while, it’s just been crazy at work and home with all the holiday festivities but today I thought I’d do a quick one.

I will admit, I kinda avoid jumpsuits. I always assume that it wouldn’t flatter my fuller figure but this one is so cute and perfect for the very hot days we’re currently having in SA.

I’m  still a little conscious about the bare arms but I’m throwing caution to the wind because it’s that hot!!!!

Confidence

“Confidence isn’t walking into a room knowing they’ll like you – It’s – I’ll be ok if they don’t!”

And that is where I’m at at this point in my life.

Darn! It took me long enough – almost 30years!!!!

And although my circle has decreased in size it’s increased in value.

I know what I bring to any relationship/ friendship – be it friend, family, spouse. I no longer fret about who’s real and who’s not. And it’s made me a happier person.

1 year older

And a whole weekend of celebrations!

On Saturday I hosted a party to celebrate mine and hubby’s birthdays – mine was yesterday – yay me!!! and hubby’s is tomorrow – yay Bae!!! (Rhyming skills again – LOL).

The theme was “Gender Bender” – All my ladies came dressed as lads and guys came as girls and boy, was it fun!!!

The guys really pulled out all the stops for this one and it was worth all the laughs! For once the ladies didn’t have to worry about hair and makeup and partying all night in ridiculously, high heels. Some of the guys actually have newfound respect for us ladies and all we go through to look our best – which brings me to my next point.

I’ve noticed a lot of woman 2 woman hate on social media. Girls dissing other girls for just about anything – she’s so skinny, she’s so fat, look what she’s wearing, look at her hair etc etc etc…like, what’s up with that?

Can we not admire another’s beauty without questioning our own? I honestly don’t know what I would do without the support of the women in my life and that includes people I’ve never met personally but gotten to know through social media. There are countless times when I was feeling some sort of way and I’d log onto Instagram or other and a post will just speak so much life into me. So why then do we choose to use our power and influence to bring our fellow sisters down? It just doesn’t make sense to me.

So, from tomorrow I’ll be posting a #woman2womanwednesday (It’s similar to the #WCW except that it’s exclusive to women – sorry guys!!!) I’ll be using this # every week to salute a woman of my choice – family/friend/follower  – anyone who I feel has inspired me at some point – because let’s be real – sometimes we just gotta hear the good stuff LOL!

So, ladies, please don’t be alarmed if I steal a pic and post some corny stuff about you hahahaha!

The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years. – Audrey Hepburn

My kinda LBD

These days I prefer loose, flowy dresses over anything even slightly clingy. I don’t go anywhere near my jeans or any kind of pants for that matter – it’s just too hot for that kinda commitment LOL!

And like I’ve mentioned in a previous post, you can never go wrong with a black dress.

I had this one custom made by the talented ladies at Fleur Fashion House – I also have the same dress in grey – you can have a look here.

Monochrome

When temperatures are soaring in SA due to a heat-wave (reaching well into the 30’s – degree Celcius) AND you’re a plus size girl, you start imaging a life where Eve didn’t eat from that forbidden fruit!

It’s really, really HOT!

This dress is perfect though, lightweight and breezy, exactly what you want in this weather!

The monochrome fashion trend has been popular for a while now so I thought I’d give it a go in a colour other than black & white.

The Shift Tunic

I must admit, I was a little reluctant to try a shift tunic. I just assumed that it wouldn’t be flattering since its not structured, but I am quite feeling this navy blue one I picked up from Ackermans. Paired with these old faithful, floral pants and we have a winner!

I’m finding that the more confident I feel about myself, the more open I am to trying different trends. I’m loving the 70’s look, which is very popular at the moment, I’ll have to play a little dress up first and see if I can pull it off.

A Few of my Favourite things…

As a plus size girl, it’s rare to find something that fits absolutely perfect. Skinnies are almost always too wide at the ankle. Blazers too wide at the forearms. Tops that are wide enough to fit my hips and tummy will often be too big around the boobs. The top I’m wearing now is one of those. I sized down so it would fit the chest area even though it’s a little snug around the hips, it’s easily concealed when tucked in like this. I couldn’t pass it up because of a minor fit problem. Forgive me for the creases in my top – I’ve been sitting at my desk!

I live in these joggers. They are seriously my fave. Also, light-weight but the reason I really live in them is because unlike the top, these pants are one of those rare items that just fit! They are super comfy and just make me feel really confident when I’m wearing them (which is always my main objective when getting dressed).

Cute, pointy flats are my thing – but cute, pointy, metallic flats…they’re my thang!!!! Hahaha! Bonus: they’re very comfy too!

The beads I’m wearing I just purchased from the stunning, Mrs Rogéro, and she’s got a variety of colours (pictured below). I can already tell they’re going to be my go-to accessory this season!

I’m loving the LA Girl flat finish pigment gloss in Dreamy. A lip colour that really stays put is always a bonus for me. They’ve got a range of awesome colours – that I’d love to have…soon!

Pumps & Sunnies:::Cotton On

And those are a few of my Favourite things 😊

Fat Girl

Once upon a time, in a beautiful country called South-Africa, lived a fat girl. Fat girl hated everything about her fat-self and when summer came around, fat girl hated her fat-self even more. Poor fat girl felt too ashamed to bare her fat thighs and flabby arms so even when temperatures  were soaring, poor fat girl always covered up with cardigans, jackets and the likes.
Poor fat girl put her fat-self through so much during the summer months from applying deodorant to her entire body  surface area to covering herself in cornstarch powder, to drenching herself in apple cider vinegar, and many other remedies she learned about, all because fat girl was wearing too many things to disguise her fat extremities which caused excessive sweating (eeeew!).

One day while fat girl was getting ready to start her anti-sweat-routine, she had an epiphany! She decided to give the sleeveless, knee-length dress a try without the usual outerwear and from that day on fat girl wore anything she damn well pleased. She discarded the anti-sweat routine and lived happily ever after!

The End

Dress: Ackermans

Shoes, bangles, earrings & bag: MrP

Belt & Sunnies: China Town

Son: God 😊
